How to Find your Niche

Do you ever have the feeling that you’re just not good at anything?

That is me, I am still searching for that one special skill I have. There are many things I enjoy doing, whether I am good at or not. I just hate that I don’t have that one talent I am known for and make part of my life. When I became a stay at home mom, I wanted something fun that I could do so I wouldn’t go stir crazy, and added bonus make some extra money! Before I became a SAHM, I was a preschool teacher and loved my job, however, other than lesson planning, art projects, and singing songs all day, I couldn’t figure out what I was good at.

I am a mom.
I am also so much more than just a mom.

As I was sitting at home with my little one, I would research all these different jobs I could do at home and make money. The ideal jobs I thought were the most interesting were not realistic for me, because I didn’t have a particular skill needed to do the jobs, such as crafting, what can I make? As I laughed about my non skill of crafting, I thought about my options. And since I can’t actually go to work because daycare is expensive and I have no one that can watch the kids, I don’t have a lot of options.

After much research about different work from home jobs, I realized my number one job is staying home with the kids and be able to homeschool. Therefore, any job I start doing has to be flexible enough with my every day schedule, and can not get to the point where it makes my life busier. I applaud the working moms, and moms who run their own business and be able to take care of their house and family.

I am not one of those people that can take on a lot, I have a hard enough time keeping up with laundry and dishes. So I decided to write down all my “skills” and degrees/licenses I have and started several categories for possible jobs.

  • Skills/licenses
  • Work from home jobs
  • Night work
  • Things I enjoy
  • Things I want to try

After writing down all the job ideas I had for each category, I still could not choose one. I read somewhere that if you cleared your mind and have a blank piece of paper in front of you and a pen, you can do this exercise.

First close your eyes. Clear your mind (easier said than done, but try). Now, with that pen and piece of paper in front of you write down all things that interest you or passionate about. Don’t think, just write, no stopping. Write down everything that comes to you. Once you put the pen down, you will be surprised with what you came up with and something may pop out to you that sparks your inner creativity!

You can do this exercise everyday, and may come up with new ideas or may write down the same ideas. Everyone is passionate about something, but sometimes you may need a little extra help to find out what that is and how you can make it part of your life.

Asking family and friends about what they think you are good at or passionate about may help too. Sometimes, others may see something in you that you don’t. It never hurts to ask for help, and ask yourself this question:

Can you work while taking care of your little one(s)?

If the whole reason you wanted a job you can do from home is to stay home with the kids, make sure to keep that at the front of your mind when searching through all these ideas.

Remember, never giving up is a skill! Keep trying to find your passion! Do what you love, even if you don’t make any money at first and share your talent!

Being a mom is the greatest talent we all have in common.

Thanks for reading and please feel free to share your ideas of how you found your passion!
